Sat in form today, a friend asked me, how we get Chickens? I answered the logical answer (from an egg..) And she then asked, well how do we get eggs that we eat? And I answered 'from a hen.' She then asked, how do the eggs decide what there going to be? Well this started a very lengthy discussion. I will repeat the verdict, just so that all bloggers know the basics on egg laying.
Eggs are created inside a chicken, and if a chicken, has mated the egg will become fertilised. And then after laying the egg, if the chicken sits on it long enough to keep it warm and let it grow, it will develop into a chicken that will hatch. (This is not like getting an egg out of the fridge and sitting on it.) The egg needs to be sat on alot, other wise it is miscarried, and turns into a normal egg with a red blood spot in it (the would have been chick.) If a male is not present, the eggs will not be fertilised and therefore are laid for eating purposes only.
I hope that this has increased your knowledge of eggs and chickens.
